Fighting the pillow

The Fibro Sleep prayer by Fibro Diva 2019

Now I lay me down to sleep,

I pray the Lord my body sleeps,

And if I lie here awake tossing all night,

I pray the Lord my next day pain be light.

Due to Fibromyalgia related insomnia, I had the un-pleasure of actually watching the clock turn from 1:59 am to 1:00 am this morning for Daylight Savings time. While the rest of the country “celebrates” getting an extra hour of sleep, I mourn having an extra hour of non-sleep.

One of the most common symptoms of Fibromyalgia is nonrestorative sleep. A major comorbid condition associated with FM, is sleep dysfunction such as sleep apnea, difficulties falling asleep or staying asleep, restless leg syndrome, or insomnia. A study reported in 2015 that, “sleep deprivation in healthy individuals can cause symptoms of fibromyalgia … suggesting that sleep dysfunction might be not only a consequence of pain but also pathogenic.” (1) WebMD.com explains, “with Fibromyalgia, the normal order of brain waves gets messed up. Deep sleep patterns are disrupted by brain waves that signal wakefulness, so you never really settle into a good sleep.” (2)
