Today I met the ortho surgeon, Vasili Karas, M.D., M.S.. More X-Rays and another exam. After what seemed like all day, he informed me that it was his medical opinion that we do a total left hip replacement asap. In medical terms that means 6 weeks from now. He is very happy to hear that I am currently in physical therapy. He says that pre-op pt will help to strengthen the joint area and make recovery a little easier than if I were doing nothing. Now I must get cardiac clearance for surgery due to my history of Long QT Syndrome. Boomer, I haven’t seen that cardiac specialist since before moving to New Orleans and back, about 6 years. I’ll try to get a referral to a local one from my primary care physician.
Dr. Karas’ website states:
“What is a total hip replacement?
Total hip replacement, also called total hip arthroplasty, is a surgical procedure to replace your hip joint with an artificial one. It’s possible to perform this procedure from behind the hip, at the side, or in front of your hip. The anterior approach refers to an incision made at the front of the hip. This approach is considered minimally invasive, or muscle-sparing, surgery because it involves the least amount of tissue damage among the three possible methods.” [1]
My surgery approach will be anterior or in the front of my hip.
The surgeon’s office is on point. By the time I got home, there was an email with a ‘surgery itinerary’ and a pre-op to do list waiting for me.
